According to reports from the New York Post, President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order that will make English the official language of the United States of America. This has never been done before in the nation’s history.
It will also be the first time that America has had an official language designate at the federal level. The order will end a rule by former President Bill Clinton that required agencies at the federal level to provide language materials for those who don’t speak English.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the news outlet that first reported on the executive order, the mandate details how unity will come about from making English the official language. Efficiency and improved civil engagement are also things identified in the text of the executive order.
Donald Trump’s Vision For This Order
For years now, President Trump has made awareness to the illegal immigration crisis that is happening in this country. Not only that, but he’s also harped on the fact that English should be the main language that is spoken in the United States.
“This is a country where we speak English, not Spanish,” Trump said during a 2015 presidential debate.
He also made another statement like that during his 2024 presidential campaign: “We have languages coming into our country. We don’t have one instructor in our entire nation that can speak that language.”
“These are languages – it’s the craziest thing – they have languages that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It’s a very horrible thing,” Trump stated.
The English Language In America
In the U.S., 32 states have made English as the official language. It is the most spoken language in the country.
There will likely be pushback on this executive order however, mostly by opposers of Trump’s presidency who view him and the order as bigoted towards those who are not originally from America and don’t speak English as their primary language.
Whether the pushback is fierce or not, remains to be seen. However, this is another example of Donald Trump refusing to listen to his critics.
The executive order to rename the “Gulf of America” the “Gulf of Mexico” was also met with harsh criticism from mostly Democrats. Yet, that didn’t stop Trump from doubling down on the mandate.
