Texas Congressman Seeks Impeachment Over Trump’s Strikes on Iran

On Tuesday, Representative Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, introduced an impeachment article against President Donald Trump, accusing him of overstepping his authority by ordering airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities without congressional approval. The move has created debates around Congress regarding the balance of power in U.S. government and the president’s role in military decisions.

Green’s resolution charges Trump with an “abuse of presidential powers by disregarding the separation of powers — devolving American democracy into authoritarianism by unconstitutionally usurping Congress’s power to declare war.” The document argues that Trump’s actions represent a dangerous shift toward unchecked executive power, threatening the foundations of democratic governance.

“President Trump’s unilateral, unprovoked use of force without congressional authorization or notice constitutes an abuse of power when there was no imminent threat to the United States, which facilitates the devolution of American democracy into authoritarianism,” Green stated, emphasizing the lack of immediate danger to justify the strikes.

WATCH:

Under Article I of the U.S. Constitution, Congress holds the authority to declare war. Yet, presidents from both parties have historically launched military actions without formal legislative approval, a practice Green’s resolution seeks to challenge.

The congressman has long criticized Trump, previously citing the president’s immigration policies, attacks on federal judges, and role in the January 6 protests as evidence of power misuse.

Green labeled Trump an “authoritarian president” and a “threat to American democracy.” In a written statement, he declared, “I did not come to Congress to be a bystander while a president abuses power and devolves American democracy into authoritarianism with himself as an authoritarian president. President Trump’s unauthorized bombing of Iran constitutes a de facto declaration of war.”

He further asserted, “No president has the right to drag this nation into war without the authorization of the people’s representatives,” framing the issue as a defense of democratic principles.

The White House, however, stood firmly behind Trump’s actions. Spokesperson Taylor Rodgers praised the president’s “peace through strength” approach, crediting it with achieving a historic milestone.

“President Trump was able to quickly accomplish what no other President has been able to achieve — thanks to his ‘peace through strength’ leadership, Iran’s nuclear program has been obliterated and a ceasefire has been agreed to,” Rodgers stated.

Rodgers called the outcome a unifying victory, stating, “Eliminating the prospect of nuclear war is a non-partisan and unifying accomplishment that everyone should celebrate as a historic moment for United States, the Middle East, and the entire world.”

Unsurprisingly, Rep. Green’s impeachment resolution did not provide the outcome he was desiring. Many Democrats didn’t even vote for it and it ultimately lost by a vote of 344 to 79.
