Trump Accuses Senator Schiff of Mortgage Fraud in Latest Political Clash

President Donald Trump unleashed an attack on California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff on Tuesday, demanding he be “brought to justice” over allegations of mortgage fraud tied to a Maryland property. The accusation, amplified through a Truth Social post, follows a criminal referral from a federal housing agency to the Justice Department.

“I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist. And now I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud,” Trump wrote. He alleged that Schiff falsely claimed his primary residence was in Maryland to secure a lower mortgage rate, despite serving as a California congressman.

“Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must LIVE in CALIFORNIA because he was a Congressman from CALIFORNIA. I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook. The FRAUD began with the refinance of his Maryland property on February 6, 2009, and continued through multiple transactions until the Maryland property was correctly designated as a second home on October 13, 2020.”

Trump didn’t hold back, adding, “Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and CROOKED Adam Schiff (now a Senator) needs to be brought to justice.”

A senior administration official, speaking to the New York Post, revealed that the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees Fannie Mae, sent the referral to the Justice Department for further investigation. The official called the situation “extremely serious,” noting that Schiff could face a criminal charge for each mortgage payment made under the alleged misrepresentation, accusing the senator of not treating the matter with due gravity.

Schiff, a former House Intelligence Committee chair who played a prominent role in Trump’s 2020 impeachment trial over Ukraine-related allegations, has long been a target of Republican ire for his claims about Trump’s Russia connections, which led to his censure. Responding on X, Schiff dismissed the accusations as a political vendetta.

“Since I led his first impeachment, Trump has repeatedly called for me to be arrested for treason. So in a way, I guess this is a bit of a letdown. And this baseless attempt at political retribution won’t stop me from holding him accountable. Not by a long shot,” he said.

He further framed the allegations as “just Donald Trump’s latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies. So it is not a surprise, only how weak this false allegation turns out to be. And much as Trump may hope, this smear will not distract from his Epstein files problem.”

A spokesperson for Schiff defended the senator, stating that “the lenders who provided the mortgages for both homes were well aware of then-Representative Schiff’s Congressional service and of his intended year-round use of both homes, neither of which were vacation homes.”

The mortgage issue first came to public attention in a 2023 CNN report, resurfacing now as a political weapon.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency, led by director Bill Pulte, declined to comment on the matter. Pulte has previously targeted another Trump adversary, New York Attorney General Letitia James, with a similar referral in April over alleged mortgage fraud involving properties in Brooklyn and Virginia.

Trump called James a “total crook” during a May Oval Office event with Attorney General Pam Bondi, and shortly after, the Albany Times-Union reported an FBI probe into James, who has rejected the claims as politically motivated.
