Donald Trump was nearly assassinated a year ago. But people still want answers as to what exactly happened. Now it’s been discovered that the Secret Service is working on holding its agents accountable for their shortfalls regarding the assassination attempt.
Secret Service Grapples with Aftermath of Trump Rally Shooting
In a stunning revelation, the Secret Service confirmed to Fox News that six agents were slapped with unpaid suspensions after a gunman’s brazen attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13, 2024.
The disciplinary measures, handed down in February 2025, targeted both supervisors and line-level agents, with suspensions ranging from 10 to 42 days, just as a Senate report on the Butler, Pennsylvania, security failures looms.
Rather than pointing fingers at individuals, the agency took collective responsibility, opting not to fire anyone. Deputy Director Matt Quinn, in an interview with CBS News, declared, we “weren’t going to fire [our] way out of this,” emphasizing a commitment to “laser focused” efforts to pinpoint and fix the core issues behind the failure.
Suspended agents, once back on duty, were reassigned to less critical roles, following a strict federal disciplinary protocol.

The Butler incident ignited fierce criticism after gunman Thomas Crooks opened fire, claiming the life of Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter, husband, and father, while narrowly missing Trump with a bullet that grazed his ear and wounding two others.
A Secret Service sniper ended the threat, but the agency’s lapse in preventing the attack drew heavy fire.
Quinn didn’t shy away from accountability, stating, “Secret Service is totally accountable for Butler,” and vowed to ensure it “never happens again” by tackling the “root cause” of the debacle.
To bolster security, the Secret Service has since deployed cutting-edge military-grade drones and mobile command units to improve communication with local law enforcement.
Yet, the agency’s challenges persisted, with a second foiled assassination attempt on Trump in West Palm Beach, Florida, weeks later, prompting the resignation of then-Director Kimberly Cheatle and sparking congressional probes.
A bipartisan House task force’s 180-page report in December 2024 labeled the Butler attack “preventable,” exposing entrenched leadership and training flaws that “created an environment” where such a breach could occur.
The report also slammed the agency’s weak coordination with local authorities, a gap the Secret Service is now hoping to close as it seeks to rebuild trust and fortify its operations.
